T-Mobile plans to sell the LG Doubleplay, a phone featuring two touchscreens, on October 26 for the unconfirmed price of $150 with a two-year contract, offering an innovative Android model that may help the carrier boost sagging sales. The DoublePlay's main display is a standard 3.5-inch touchscreen. The second, two-inch touchscreen is in the middle of a slide-out, split Qwerty keyboard. The second screen can duplicate the main display, show an alternate view of what's on the larger screen, or be used to view something completely separate.

HP issued a statement today explaining the current outlook for TouchPad tablets. HP is making another batch of TouchPad tablets, but don't get all excited.The announcement has led many to speculate that perhaps HP is having second thoughts about killing the TouchPad, and that it might get back into the tablet business after all. But, the TouchPad is not coming back--at least not from HP. A report from DigiTimes Systems claims upstream suppliers are not happy about getting stuck with TouchPad component inventory. The story cites HP sources stating, "The suppliers are currently in negotiation with HP to find a solution for the component inventory, while HP Taiwan pointed out will maintain its promise to the partners."

Google's Android smartphones recently surged by 15% in popularity in the U.S., topping out the field with a nearly 42% share, according to the latest ComScore survey released Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Research in Motion and Microsoftsaw declines in their market shares. Microsoft, which makes the Windows Mobile and Windows Phone mobile operating systems, stayed in fourth place with nearly a 15% decline for a 5.7% market share.

For all mobile devices, including smartphones and lower-end feature phones, ComScore reported 234 million customers in July, led by Samsung (25.5% share), LG (20.9%), Motorola (14.1%), Apple (9.5%) and RIM (7.6%).

Samsung will link its Android phones and tablets to iOS devices and BlackBerry phones with a new messaging service called ChatOn.
