Sprint Newsroom: Sprint Offers Geotab Plug-and-Play Fleet Solutions to Federal Agencies

Sprint Nextel Corporation has posted the following release to its Newsroom website:

Sprint Offers Geotab Plug-and-Play Fleet Solutions to Federal Agencies

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (BUSINESS WIRE), April 19, 2013 - Sprint (NYSE:S) and Geotab Inc. announced today that Geotab plug-and-play fleet management solutions are now available to eligible federal agencies as part of Sprint's Federal Supply Schedule contract with the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA)*. Sprint now offers both federal and commercial fleet operators access to plug-and-play solutions from Geotab, a leading provider of technology and software designed to increase fleet productivity, cost effectiveness and safety.

Recognized as an industry leader in fleet solutions, Geotab offers the most versatile and powerful plug-and-play fleet management solution on the market today. This solution combines the simplicity of plug-and-play with state-of-the-art analytics and easy-to-use Web-based user tools and reports to help customers effectively manage their fleet by knowing in real time where their vehicles are and what they are doing.

Geotab solutions enable federal fleet managers to track and monitor vehicle locations, identify driving behaviors, optimize driver dispatch and routing, and improve overall health of their fleets with maintenance reminders and alerts. Federal agencies served by Sprint will have access to the Geotab GO6 device.

The GO6 is a proprietary device designed and engineered by Geotab. It offers the versatility to support any type of vehicle with the use of a special J-BUS adaptor and the unique ability to expand capabilities with Garmin navigation, Iridium satellite, sensors, and other add-ons using a special expander cable called the IOX. The device plugs into the vehicle's OBD-II port – where it then reads and sends vehicle health, location, and driving style information back to the Geotab Web-based application.

"Federal agencies can transform the way they manage fleet resources and realize significant gains to the bottom line with real-time fleet management and other mobile resource management solutions," said Colin Sutherland, vice president, Sales, Geotab. "We are proud to join with Sprint in bringing powerful advantages to federal fleet managers, including the ability to lower fuel costs, prevent vehicle wear and tear, prioritize vehicle maintenance, and qualify for insurance discounts."

"We are pleased to extend our current Geotab Connected Fleet solution to federal agencies," said Wayne Ward, vice president-M2M Group, Sprint. "Plug-and-play fleet management solutions are a key part of our portfolio, providing a powerful, yet easy-to-use tool for driving impactful savings and efficiencies. Geotab solutions align well with Sprint's commitment to safe and secure driving."

Sprint's open approach to M2M is built on flexible network architecture, combined with collaborative relationships among customers, vendors and Sprint's dedicated team of experienced solutions engineers. Sprint brings all these elements together with a focus on understanding each fleet operator's business, then acting as an integrator to produce the most efficient end-to-end solutions package for the specific need.

Sprint's secure network supports connected fleet solutions by enabling accuracy and reliability for an expansive range of telematics applications. To ensure that the growing demand for telematics and other advanced solutions will be met, Sprint has embarked on Network Vision, a multiyear network initiative designed to enhance customers' experience with faster data speeds, improved voice quality and easier connectivity.

Sprint Newsroom: Sprint Joins the FCC in Showcasing Technology Solutions to Help Combat Distracted Driving

Sprint Nextel Corporation has posted the following release to its Newsroom website:

Sprint Joins the FCC in Showcasing Technology Solutions to Help Combat Distracted Driving

WASHINGTON (BUSINESS WIRE), April 19, 2013 - As part of its commitment to National Distracted Driving Awareness month, Sprint (NYSE: S) is participating in the Federal Communications Commission Distracted Driving Technology Showcase taking place today at FCC headquarters in Washington.

According to the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, drivers are 23 times more likely to crash if they're texting while driving.* To help combat this problem, Sprint has developed a wide-ranging portfolio of solutions for teens, families and those who spend a lot of time behind the wheel, such as long-haul truck drivers, delivery drivers, sales representatives and field employees.

Since 2005, Sprint has worked on behalf of its customers and employees on the issue of distracted driving by partnering with schools, nonprofit organizations and product developers on various programs to help combat texting while driving and promote responsible driving. The following Sprint products and partners will be featured at the FCC event:

  • Audiovox: Audiovox uses Sprint's wireless connectivity for its Car Connection on-board diagnostic system (OBD). Car Connection is a simple, do-it-yourself telematics (OBD II plug-in) device that enables you to monitor, manage and maintain vehicle performance under the hood and behind the wheel – all from your laptop, smartphone or tablet.
  • Sprint Drive First: The Sprint Drive First application locks an Android mobile phone when the phone's GPS detects motion above 10 miles per hour. Sprint Drive First can direct incoming calls to voice mail and silences distracting alerts. A customizable auto-response can be sent to all text messages, which are held until the driver comes to a stop. Sprint Drive First is also part of Sprint Guardian, a bundle of safety- and security-oriented services for families. Sprint Guardian also includes Sprint Mobile Controls, Sprint Family Locator and Lookout Family Mobile Security.
  • DriveCam: Sprint also works with companies that develop wireless embedded communication solutions to reduce distracted driving. DriveCam offers a driving safety program based on a video event recorder wirelessly enabled by Sprint. When g-forces indicate distracted driving, it sends a video to DriveCam, which then provides a professional safety analysis that fleet managers or parents of teens can use in coaching their driver. American Family Insurance makes it available as its Teen Safe Driver ProgramSM at no charge for its customers.
  • Geotab: Geotab provides the world's most sophisticated GPS fleet management solutions that help organizations develop company-wide management policies to improve driver behavior, enhance driver safety, and on-road productivity.
  • FleetSafer: Sprint works with Aegis Mobility to help commercial fleet operators promote safe, legal and responsible use of smartphones. FleetSafer is the first solution to help ensure compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration rules requiring mobile phone calls made by interstate truck and bus drivers to be both "one-touch" and hands-free. The application ensures that smartphones and tablets conform to the organization's safety policies and best practices regarding texting, emailing or communicating while driving.

More information about Sprint's focus on driving efforts can be found at www.sprint.com/drive. At this site visitors can access a database of useful distracted-driving mobile applications and find other helpful resources on responsible driving behavior.

Businesses Can Collaborate and Communicate More Easily With Microsoft Office 365 Offered by Sprint

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (BUSINESS WIRE), April 18, 2013 - Enhancements to cloud-enabled Microsoft Office 365 offered by Sprint (NYSE: S) will make it even easier for small to mid-sized businesses (SMBs) to collaborate and communicate from virtually anywhere they are, whether in the office or on the go.

The variety of plans available from Sprint has expanded to offer more choice and flexibility, and several new a la carte options also are available. As with previous plans, businesses enjoy predictable monthly costs with no up-front infrastructure expenses, pay-as-you-go plans and savings by bundling all of the necessary tools, all with a single bill and single point of contact. The new plans include:

  • Sprint Professional Plus with Office 365 – This new package provides all the cloud-based components of the Office 365 Professional plan AND the downloadable version of Office 2013 (called Office 365 ProPlus). Office 365 ProPlus includes the most popular version of desktop applications, such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.
  • Sprint Preferred with Office 365 – Combines the most commonly used Active Directory and IT policy management capabilities of the Enterprise plan with Office 365 ProPlus.
  • 20 stand-alone or add-on products for Office 365 are now available from Sprint. These products provide optimum solutions to address customer needs, including Exchange Online Plan 1 and 2 and new Kiosk plans.

Coming soon to Office 365 plans is Sprint Audio Conferencing for Lync™ Online, powered by InterCall, which provides businesses an enhanced Lync™ conferencing experience to drive closer collaboration with internal and external teams. Options include adding 10, 25 or 50 dial-in attendees by phone with existing Lync™ Online conferencing capabilities. Benefits also include Carefree Cloud assistance through the entire Sprint Audio Conferencing setup process, including synchronization with Lync™ Online for immediate productivity gain.

SMBs also now can purchase Office 365 offered by Sprint in Sprint Consultation Centers located at select Sprint retail stores.

"We've seen strong demand for our Office 365 plans, and our unique Carefree Cloud support clearly is breaking down barriers to cloud adoption by helping to simplify the purchase and onboarding process for businesses," said John Dupree, senior vice president of business sales, Sprint. "We felt it was critical to build on this successful model by expanding our offers in order to meet the distinct needs of SMBs within a variety of industries and work styles."

Frost & Sullivan recently recognized strong value of Office 365 offered by Sprint

Sprint received the 2012 North American Customer Value Enhancement Award in Mobile Communications and Collaboration from Frost and Sullivan for its Office 365 offer.

According to this year's annual survey conducted by Frost & Sullivan of mobile and wireless decision-makers in North America, smaller business respondents cite the cost of doing business, post-sale service and support capability, and professional services capabilities as the top factors they consider when selecting potential mobility partners.

Office 365 offered by Sprint includes unique Carefree Cloud "white glove" migration and onboarding assistance, 24x7 support, online resources and a user-friendly portal to manage the services. Carefree Cloud is available with all Office 365 plans offered by Sprint at no additional charge (the onboarding and migration services portion of Carefree Cloud is provided at no additional charge when used within the first 90 days of purchase) to all employees within a business so companies have the flexibility to receive the level of migration and ongoing support they need.

The key to Sprint's cloud strategy is teaming with leaders in software and cloud computing while enhancing the services with seamless integration of mobility for virtually anytime, anywhere access from any device. With reliable, secure connectivity over Sprint's network via 3G, 4G and all-IP Global MPLS technologies, businesses of all sizes can confidently embrace a variety of hosted services to improve their productivity and cost structures.

Sprint Newsroom: Sprint Offers Comprehensive Managed Network Solutions to Help Companies Focus on Transforming Their Businesses

Sprint Nextel Corporation has posted the following release to its Newsroom website:

Sprint Offers Comprehensive Managed Network Solutions to Help Companies Focus on Transforming Their Businesses

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (BUSINESS WIRE), April 16, 2013 - As IT and business leaders partner to provide their companies with strategic technologies, managed network and cloud services have become more vital to success. Sprint (NYSE: S) is meeting this need with comprehensive managed network solutions bundled with MPLS transport and customer premise equipment to help transform businesses while increasing workforce mobilization, enterprise flexibility and productivity at lowered operating costs.

"The network is the most important cloud investment a company will make and efficient management of that network is crucial to the success of business-critical applications," said Mike Fitz, vice president of wireline, Sprint. "Businesses benefit from Sprint's customized approach to managing customer networks, simplified pricing and a single account team that understands converged, cloud and mobility solutions."

Specific components of Managed Network Solutions from Sprint include:

  • Network solution design
  • Dedicated implementation manager
  • Proactive performance management
  • Comprehensive break/fix for circuits and routers
  • CPE monitoring and customer notification of issues
  • CPE configuration, installation and testing
  • Consultation and assessment
  • Competitive service level agreements
  • A single point of contact and bill for all services

Businesses also have 24x7 access to CPE performance data via Compass, Sprint's no-charge, online tool for real-time WAN performance management, allowing customers to understand, optimize and trouble-shoot network performance, view implementation status, and understand overall network health.

In addition to the robust features of Compass, businesses using Managed Network Solutions can view their entire network through the cloud – with network visibility extending beyond the Sprint edge router to customers' edge routers. This includes how Sprint is managing the network as well as interface testing, change and trouble management, and managed asset configuration views for all managed devices. Sprint also provides WAN optimization reports and key performance metrics.

Nemertes Research examines managed network solutions further in its recent paper, "The Transformational Shift from IT to ET."

"We have documented a paradigm shift underway in the way technology and business leaders interact. It's the transformation from Information Technology (IT) to Enterprise Technology (ET), and not only does this shift change the way business leaders view IT, it alters the organizational structure of IT itself," said Robin Gareiss, executive vice president and founder, Nemertes Research. "What's telling is the success correlation between companies that have a formal engagement program and their revenue per employee. Engaging with vendor partners for the development of new technologies correlates with a more efficient, profitable organization."

In 2012, Sprint received the Nemertes Pilothouse award for MPLS Services, beating all rivals in customer service. As the Top Provider among Market Challengers, Sprint achieved highest scores in customer service and value within the category, while remaining consistently strong in technology.

In 2011, Sprint received the Nemertes Pilothouse award as a Top Provider among Market Challengers for Managed Router Services, an award to recognize services designed to manage any portion of an enterprise-owned switch/router infrastructure. Sprint beat all rivals in the overall score, ranked highest in technology and customer service, and earned a close second in value.

Sprint's comprehensive suite of Managed Solutions includes Managed Network, Managed IP Telephony and Managed Security. For more information on Sprint managed services, MPLS and converged solutions, visit www.sprint.com/convergence or contact your Sprint account team. Sprint Newsroom: Sprint Celebrates Earth Month with NBA Green Week, Launch of Portable Power Pack with Eco-Friendly Features, Phone Recycling and More

Sprint Nextel Corporation has posted the following release to its Newsroom website:

Sprint Celebrates Earth Month with NBA Green Week, Launch of Portable Power Pack with Eco-Friendly Features, Phone Recycling and More

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (BUSINESS WIRE), April 15, 2013 - Sprint [NYSE:S] is committed to reducing its environmental impact year-round, so the company has introduced several initiatives to celebrate Earth Month and Earth Day on April 22. Sprint, ranked No. 3 on Newsweek's Green Rankings and known for its industry-leading focus on sustainability, will host several Earth Month activities and promotions that will continue the company's mission to encourage wireless device recycling and its customers to live a greener lifestyle.

NBA Green Week

Earth Month began with NBA Green Week, which was presented by Sprint and included a variety of local and national greening projects, recycling programs, giveaways and auctions that encouraged fans to "go green." NBA Green Week tipped off April 4 with the launch of a Pledge to Recycle contest: Fans who pledge to recycle their old mobile devices through May 16 can enter to win a grand-prize trip for two to the 2013 NBA Finals. In conjunction with Green Week, the league also worked with Sterling Planet – a leading supplier of renewable energy – to offset the amount of energy used during all of the NBA games that took place during Green Week. NBA teams also held a variety of events – from tree plantings to recycling drives – in their local markets.

Green Zone

On Earth Day, Sprint will unveil the Green Zone app, an exciting update to the Sprint Green ID pack originally launched in April 2011. Green Zone will provide instant access to mobile content to help users live more responsibly. From shopping to lifestyle tips, creating a greener workout, or navigating the fast-changing world of hybrid cars, the Green Zone serves as a resource and companion for users looking to live a greener, healthier lifestyle. Green Zone users can also opt to receive notifications at the top of their screen to alert them about upcoming green events, additions to the app and more. The app will be available to Sprint users who download the Green ID pack or through Google Play.

Sprint's Green ID pack is one of more than 100 Sprint ID packs, which automatically load apps, widgets, wallpapers and other content on select Sprint devices. Other apps within the Green ID pack include Earth911.com's iRecycle app, which uses GPS to locate recycling drop-off sites for materials from computers to paint; and Light Bulb Finder from Eco Hatchery, which makes it easy to switch from conventional light bulbs to energy-saving equivalents without compromising on appearance, light quality or performance.

"Since launching the Green ID pack, Sprint customers have replaced 26,196 light bulbs using the app, saving $382,000 per year and more than 4 million pounds of CO2 per year, equivalent to the annual emissions for 356 cars," said Adam Borut, co-founder of Eco Hatchery.

Launch of the EcoMoto P4000

Last Friday, Sprint launched the Motorola P4000 Universal Portable Power Pack, which is part of the EcoMoto™ family of products and contains no BFRs or PVC and is certified CarbonFree®. This portable power pack can recharge your smartphone, tablet, MP3 player, Bluetooth® headset or camera with its built-in micro-USB cable, and most others with its standard USB charge port2. The power pack can also help save energy by providing up to two full charges on the go while automatically shutting off when the P4000 or devices are fully charged. Twenty-five percent of the P4000's housing contains post-consumer recycled plastic by weight, and the product comes in 100 percent curbside recyclable packaging. The P4000 retails for $79.99.

UL Environment (ULE) Scoring for Platinum Phones on Sprint.com

Sprint and ULE developed the first environmental standard for mobile phones in 2010. Since then, Sprint has offered more devices with eco-friendly features than any other U.S. carrier. Beginning today, Sprint.com customers will be able to see which of Sprint's phones are ULE platinum-certified and what that means in terms of their environmental impact.

Sprint and World Wildlife Fund Focus on Phone Recycling

Sprint has taken back more than 47 million wireless devices to date through their recycling programs, more than any other wireless carrier. When customers take advantage of the Sprint Buyback program, they can receive up to a $300 account credit when they recycle their eligible old phone upon trade-in. On Earth Day, Sprint will donate $1 to World Wildlife Fund for every phone collected, making a minimum contribution of $10,000. Today, Sprint is one of only 30 companies accepted in World Wildlife Fund's Climate Savers program based on its aggressive commitments to combat climate change.

Sharing Success Stories

To end Earth Month, Sprint executives will participate in two high-profile sustainability conferences, sharing information about the company's commitment to doing well while doing good things for the environment. As a featured speaker at the Ceres Conference, May 1-2, CEO Dan Hesse will discuss how Sprint has created shared value for customers, the planet and its own bottom line through industry-leading sustainability programs and innovations. Fared Adib, senior vice president of products and platforms, will address the Fortune Brainstorm Green conference about Sprint's unprecedented device-recycling success (including $1 billion in cost avoidance for the company), and speak on a panel asking "How do we double America's recycling rate in the next five years?"

"All of these efforts to reduce our environmental impact are imperative to the success of our business," said Ralph Reid, vice president of corporate social responsibility at Sprint. "Working with our suppliers, our customers and our strategic partners like the World Wildlife Fund and the NBA to raise awareness around programs like the Sprint Buyback program is a win-win for everyone."

Sprint continues to receive recognition for its leadership in environmental practices. In each of the last two years, the carrier has been named No. 3 in the United States by Newsweek's annual Green Rankings of the 500 greenest companies. Last month, global consulting and analyst firm Frost and Sullivan recognized Sprint as the 2013 North American Award for Green Excellence. In 2012, the carrier was named No. 4 – and the only wireless provider – on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Top 20 Technology & Telecom list of green power users within the sector. Sprint has also been recognized by independent analyst firm Verdantix for its corporate sustainability performance, and for the last two years Sprint Buyback has been named the best buyback program in the industry by Compass Intelligence, based on an overall score among national carriers.
