Sprint Newsroom: Samsung GALAXY Note II Combines the Creativity of a Tablet and Productivity of a Smartphone with Truly Unlimited Data and 4G LTE from Sprint

Sprint Nextel Corporation has posted the following release to its Newsroom website:

Samsung GALAXY Note II Combines the Creativity of a Tablet and Productivity of a Smartphone with Truly Unlimited Data and 4G LTE from Sprint

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (BUSINESS WIRE), September 19, 2012 - Sprint (NYSE:S), the only national carrier with Truly Unlimited? 4G LTE data, text and calling to any mobile, is gearing up to offer Samsung GALAXY Note® II. This innovative device will be available on the Sprint 4G LTE network (available in select markets) this fall in two color options – Marble White or Titanium Gray. Pricing and the availability date will be provided later.

Manufactured by Samsung Telecommunications America, LLC (Samsung Mobile) – the No. 1 mobile phone provider in the United States1, GALAXY Note II will boast several firsts for Sprint – first to launch with Android™ 4.1, Jelly Bean; first smartphone display larger than 5 inches; and first device to launch with a quad-core processor.

"We are very excited to bring this unique and innovative device into the Sprint lineup with the benefit of Sprint's Truly Unlimited data plans," said Fared Adib, Sprint vice president-Product Development. "Sprint's unlimited data plans are the perfect match for GALAXY Note II because our customers can enjoy the huge screen, fast LTE support and other creative features without worrying about costly overages or sharing data."

With the latest HD Super AMOLED™ screen technology powering the device's 5.5-inch 720p display, images are bigger, clearer and brighter than ever. Performance and power are built-in on GALAXY Note II, thanks to Samsung's Exynos™ 1.6GHz quad-core processor, a long-lasting battery and blazing fast 4G/LTE network speeds.

Clever and Unique Features

GALAXY Note II comes with a new, built-in S Pen™ that is longer, thicker and ergonomically designed for the perfect grip. Its advanced features also provide enhanced capabilities to capture ideas and inspirations instantly and to combine handwriting with any digital content directly on the screen.

Selecting and cropping text, images or other content on GALAXY Note II with the S Pen is very similar to a traditional "click-mouse" experience. When the S Pen's side button is pressed down, users can draw precise lines around the content to be cropped out, highlighted or copied into another application.

With Air View, users can hover the S Pen over an email, image gallery, or video to preview the content without having to open it. This feature also enables users to launch a pop-up web browser or access an enlarged preview of website content without opening the full site.

The Easy Clip feature allows users to instantly outline and crop any content on the screen in any shape to save, share or paste. Once done cropping the image, users can freely edit the cropped content through coloring, shading or their own personal handwriting.

GALAXY Note II features an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and 1.9 megapixel front-facing camera with HD video recording. The camera's powerful features include Buddy Photo Share, Burst Shot and Best Photo that were introduced on GALAXY S III earlier in June. Additional features include:

  • Popup Note extends the concept of Popup Play letting users open an S Note instantly as a pop-up window anywhere on the screen.
  • Quick Command, a new gesture pad feature, lets users quickly activate frequently used apps with the S Pen. The command pad appears when a user just swipes upward on the screen with the S Pen button pressed. Users can quickly send an email, make a call or search a location as they draw preregistered marks on the command pad or register a unique mark to allow for quick and easy access.
  • Best Faces camera function allows users to choose the most preferred face or pose of each person from group portrait photos. Users can also personalize photos by leaving handwritten notes on the backside of a photo using the S Pen. Handwritten Photo Notes can be shared with others in jpg format.
  • Screen Recorder allows users to share their experiences with others quickly and easily.
  • S Beam allows users to tap the back of GALAXY Note II against another S-Beam-enabled device to share large video files and documents via NFC and Wi-Fi Direct™ without using data service.
  • Share Shot seamlessly shares pictures taken with GALAXY Note II's 8- megapixel camera to other phones from up to 200 feet away.
  • Idea Sketch allows users to easily add illustrations by handwriting keywords on the S Note.
  • Sprint Professional Grade and Samsung SAFE to help ensure that businesses have the security and control they require to protect the enterprise.
  • Long-lasting 3,100mAh battery.
  • 16GB internal memory (ROM) and 2GB (RAM) microSD™ card slot supporting up to 64GB.
  • International voice and data capable with GSM/UMTS/CDMA networks.

Enjoy Data Without Limits

GALAXY Note II requires activation on one of the Sprint Everything Data plans starting at just $79.99 per month (taxes and fees excluded) with Truly Unlimited data, text and calling to any mobile. No throttling, no metering and no overages, all while on the Sprint network. With Sprint's Everything Data and other plans that include Truly Unlimited data, Sprint is continuing its history of data leadership by making it easy for its customers to use data in all the ways that are useful to them, such as news, email, music, TV and GPS navigation, without worrying about data overages on their monthly bill.

Sprint 4G LTE is now available in 19 cities, including Atlanta, Baltimore, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, San Antonio and Waco, Texas. Sprint's buildout of its 4G LTE network is under way in more than 100 additional cities within its existing nationwide 3G footprint. Major metropolitan areas in which Sprint 4G LTE is expected to be available in the coming months include Boston; Charlotte, N.C.; Chicago; Indianapolis; Los Angeles; Memphis, Tenn.; Miami; Nashville, Tenn.; New Orleans; New York; Philadelphia; and Washington, D.C.

By the end of 2013, Sprint expects to have largely completed the nationwide build out of its all-new 3G and 4G network, a program known as Network Vision. Sprint Newsroom: Sprint Direct Connect surpasses 1 million-customer milestone

Sprint Nextel Corporation has posted the following release to its Newsroom website:

Sprint Direct Connect surpasses 1 million-customer milestone

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (BUSINESS WIRE), September 18, 2012 - Sprint (NYSE: S) today announced that its Sprint® Direct Connect® push-to-talk (PTT) service has surpassed the 1 million-customer milestone as customers continue to migrate to the service on Sprint's CDMA network.

Less than a year ago, Sprint launched Sprint Direct Connect, ushering in the next generation of PTT service from the company that pioneered push-to-talk. The service debuted packed with broadband data capabilities, familiar push-to-talk features, rugged and reliable handsets, and a broadening push-to-talk coverage map.

Today, Sprint Direct Connect has matured into the industry's push-to-talk gold standard with:

  • Triple the square miles of coverage compared to the company's legacy Nextel National Network
  • Instant call set-up time on domestic PTT calls
  • International coverage to Latin American countries that most frequently use PTT service; and,
  • A range of rugged, military-spec handsets including the Motorola ADMIRAL™ smartphone

"One million customers in less than a year is an important achievement and reflects well on the permanence of push-to-talk as a communications solution," said Paget Alves, Sprint's chief sales officer. "Sprint Direct Connect has clearly met the increasing demand for faster data speeds and better and broader coverage on push-to-talk devices."

Last quarter, 60 percent of total subscribers who left the postpaid Nextel platform were recaptured on the postpaid Sprint platform up from 46 percent in the first quarter. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), a division of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), is one customer to recently migrate to Sprint Direct Connect from its legacy Nextel service. Sprint will provide FEMA with 2,000 Sprint Direct Connect handsets equipped with an Actsoft GPS tracking and navigation solution to support FEMA's nationwide Mass Evacuation Program.

Sprint's upgraded push-to-talk platform, created by Qualcomm, has played a significant role in drawing customers from iDEN to broadband CDMA. "The Qualcomm platform represents a carrier-grade, IP-based solution for Sprint that delivers the advanced push-to-talk experiences customers are demanding today and sets a solid foundation for Sprint Direct Connect to support even more advanced communications in the future," said Michael Wallace, senior vice president and general manager of Qualcomm Internet Services.

Earlier this year, Sprint announced it will decommission its iDEN network as early as June 30, 2013 as part of Network Vision plans. Network Vision is expected to add net economic value for Sprint from reduced roaming costs, cell-site reduction, backhaul efficiencies, more efficient use of capital, and energy cost savings.

The company has already discontinued selling iDEN devices in most channels; Sprint will continue to support business customers with iDEN devices as needed during their transition to Sprint Direct Connect service.

About Sprint Direct Connect:

Sprint Direct Connect features a portfolio of push-to-talk services that allow individuals and groups to get more done – quickly and easily, with just the push of a button. Among the initial Sprint Direct Connect services:

  • Direct Connect®– Instant, one-to-one push-to-talk calling nationwide on the Sprint network, with any other Direct Connect subscriber. Direct Connect is the core push-to-talk feature and is designed for interoperability across Sprint and Nextel network platforms.
  • Guaranteed Talk Permit – The assurance that when you hear the push-to-talk "chirp," your call was successfully transmitted.
  • Call Alert with Text – Send an audio alert with an optional text message to let another Direct Connect subscriber know you are trying to reach them, and why.
  • Group Connect® – Communicate with up to 20 other Sprint Direct Connect subscribers all at once – nationwide, at the push of one button.
  • TeamDCSM – Communicate with up to 200 other Sprint Direct Connect subscribers at the same time nationwide.
  • NextMail® – Send a recorded message to any email worldwide or mobile handset via text message by using the Direct Connect button.
  • Availability Notification – Request the availability status of another push-to-talk member and, if they are busy, request a notification when they are free.
  • One-Touch Direct Connect – Allows quick access to multiple Direct Connect options.

Sprint Newsroom: Sprint Sustainability Efforts Named Top In Sector in U.S. by Two Leading Indexes

Sprint Nextel Corporation has posted the following release to its Newsroom website:

Sprint Sustainability Efforts Named Top In Sector in U.S. by Two Leading Indexes

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (BUSINESS WIRE), September 13, 2012 - Within the last 24 hours Sprint [NYSE:S], named No. 3 on Newsweek's 2011 Green Rankings, received two prestigious recognitions for its industry-leading commitment to sustainability.

Sprint was named one of 53 top companies – and the top U.S. wireless carrier – on the 2012 Carbon Disclosure Project S&P 500 Climate Change Report 2012 for its leading carbon disclosure score. And for the second consecutive year, Sprint was named U.S. Sector Leader on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) North America, which recognizes the wireless carrier as a leader in sustainability among the top 20 percent of the 600 largest companies in North America.

A growing number of corporations submitted to both indexes – a testament to the fact that investors are increasingly interested in corporate responsibility as an integral part of overall business strategy.

"It is an honor to be acknowledged for doing the right thing, especially when those acknowledgements come from two of the business world's most respected indexes," said Bill White, Sprint senior vice president, corporate communications and corporate responsibility. "Mitigating the impacts the wireless industry has on the environment is a critical component to our business strategy and to our environmental commitment. There is long-term value for companies that understand the benefits of reducing their environmental impact and transparently reporting their progress using metrics that matter."

Carbon Disclosure Project's Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index, a key component of Carbon Disclosure Project's annual S&P 500 report, highlights companies that have displayed a strong approach to information disclosure regarding climate change, internal data management and an understanding of climate change related issues affecting the company. The report noted that, while the Telecommunication Services sector overall ranked 5/10 in disclosure score improvement, Sprint's score improved by 16 points over last year's report, to 97 – the highest in the sector and just two points behind the top two overall performers, Microsoft and UPS.

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is an international, not-for-profit organization that represents 655 institutional investors with $78 trillion in assets. The organization provides the only global system for companies and cities to measure, disclose, manage and share vital environmental information. The index, compiled by PwC on behalf of CDP, focused on greenhouse gas emissions, emissions reduction targets, and the risks and opportunities associated with climate change.

Sprint is the first and only U.S. telecom company to publicly announce an absolute GHG emission reduction goal and recently reported a year-over-year reduction in absolute emissions of 3.25 percent. Sprint also measures its carbon efficiency based on metric tons of CO2-e per terabyte of data traversing its network. Using this metric, the carrier saw a 31 percent improvement in carbon intensity.

Last year, Sprint was named as one of only 28 companies in the world to be named into the World Wildlife Fund Climate Savers Program and was the first Climate Savers partner to address all scopes of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through their agreement with WWF.

"Sprint's leadership demonstrates the value of reducing greenhouse gas emissions beyond their own operations," said Matt Banks, senior program officer at WWF. "It also proves that Climate Savers companies are leading the growing trend of businesses operating in a more efficient and climate friendly way. We applaud Sprint for this recognition and look forward to their leadership as science continues to enrich what business can deliver to curb the climate threat."

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) – managed by Dow Jones Indexes and Sustainable Asset Management (SAM) – tracks the performance of the world's leading companies in terms of economic, environmental and social criteria. During the pre-launch phase, customers with capable 4G LTE devices may begin to see 4G LTE coverage in these areas and are welcome to use the network even before it officially launches. Sprint plans to announce commercial availability of 4G LTE in these cities in the coming months, at which point we expect coverage, performance and reliability to get even better. Eventually, the markets will fill in until coverage largely matches the existing nationwide 3G footprint. By the end of 2013, Sprint expects to have completed the nationwide build out of the all new 3G and 4G network.

Currently, Sprint offers the new 4G LTE service in 19 metropolitan areas: Atlanta; Athens, Ga.; Baltimore; Calhoun, Ga.; Carrollton, Ga.; Newnan, Ga.; Rome, Ga.; Dallas; Fort Worth, Texas; Gainesville, Ga.; Granbury-Hood County, Texas; Houston; Huntsville, Texas; Kansas City, Mo./Kansas City, Kan.; Manhattan/Junction City, Kan.; San Antonio, Texas; Sedalia, Mo.; Waco, Texas; and St. Joseph, Mo.

According to management consulting firm Chetan Sharma Consulting, mobile data is expected to comprise 95 percent of the global mobile traffic by 2015. Sprint's network strategy, known as Network Vision, is designed to meet these growing demands. With Network Vision, customers can expect to benefit from an updated 3G network and new 4G LTE network, enabling expanded coverage, improved network reliability, better voice quality, and faster data speeds as the improvements are rolled out across the country.

"The mobile industry is going through an incredible change – smartphones, connected devices, and the seemingly unlimited supply of new applications and services are changing consumer behavior in dramatic ways," said Chetan Sharma, founder and president at Chetan Sharma Consulting.

As part of its overall network strategy, Sprint is also doing a complete overhaul of its 3G infrastructure so that customers can enjoy better wireless signal strength, in-building coverage, and fewer dropped/blocked calls. These enhancements are now available to customers in several markets across the country, with significant deployment in Baltimore, Boston and Washington, D.C., and will continue to improve in the weeks and months ahead.

Sprint was the first national wireless carrier to introduce 4G on the WiMAX network in 2008 and began rolling out 4G LTE to customers on July 15 in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and surrounding cities.

Unlimited + Sprint 4G LTE = Game-changing wireless offer for customers

In today's competitive wireless market, the value of unlimited has never been more apparent and Sprint is clearly the best choice in wireless. Customers with capable devices can combine Sprint's all-new 3G and 4G LTE networks and enjoy unlimited data while on the Sprint network. Data usage continues to increase and consumers value Truly Unlimited data because it's simple and straightforward – no metering, no throttling, and no need to share data, which increases the likelihood of a surprise monthly bill because of overage charges.

Coupled with unbeatable plans and fast devices, Sprint has been working hard to deliver the best customer experience in the past few years. The 2012 American Customer Satisfaction Index ranked Sprint No. 1 among all national carriers in customer satisfaction and most improved, across all 47 industries measured, over the last four years. And Sprint has been ranked Highest in Satisfaction with the Purchase Experience among Full-service Wireless Providers three times in a row by J.D. Power and Associates.

Sprint's Network Vision project expects to be largely complete with the all-new network by the end of 2013. For the most up-to-date details on Sprint's 4G LTE portfolio and rollout, please visit www.sprint.com/4GLTE.

Forward-Looking Statements

This release, and other written and oral statements made by Clearwire from time to time, contain forward-looking statements which are based on management's current expectations and beliefs, as well as on a number of assumptions concerning future events made with information that is currently available. Forward-looking statements may include, without limitation, management's expectations regarding future financial and operating performance and financial condition; proposed transactions; network development and market launch plans; strategic plans and objectives; industry conditions; the strength of the balance sheet; and liquidity and financing needs. The words "will," "would," "may," "should," "estimate," "project," "forecast," "intend," "expect," "believe," "target," "designed," "plan" and similar expressions are intended to identify forward-looking statements. Readers are cautioned not to put undue reliance on such forward-looking statements, which are not a guarantee of performance and are subject to a number of uncertainties and other factors, many of which are outside of Clearwire's control, which could cause actual results to differ materially and adversely from such statements. Some factors that could cause actual results to differ are:

  • We have a history of operating losses and we expect to continue to realize significant net losses for the foreseeable future.
  • If our business fails to perform as we expect or if we incur unforeseen expenses in the near term, we will require additional capital to fund our current business. Also, we will need substantial additional capital over the long-term. Such additional capital may not be available on acceptable terms or at all. If we fail to obtain additional capital, our business prospects, financial condition and results of operations will likely be materially and adversely affected, and we will be forced to consider all available alternatives.
  • Our current plans and projections are based on a number of assumptions about our future performance, which may prove to be inaccurate, such as our ability to substantially expand our wholesale business and implement various cost savings initiatives.
  • Our business has become increasingly dependent on our wholesale partners, and Sprint in particular. If we do not receive the amount of revenues we expect from existing wholesale partners or if we are unable to enter into new agreements with additional wholesale partners for new wholesale commitments, our business prospects, results of operations and financial condition could be adversely affected, or we could be forced to consider all available alternatives.
  • We regularly evaluate our plans, and we may elect to pursue new or alternative strategies which we believe would be beneficial to our business, including among other things, expanding our network coverage to new markets, augmenting our network coverage in existing markets, changing our sales and marketing strategy and/or acquiring additional spectrum. Such modifications to our plans could significantly change our capital requirements.
  • We plan to deploy LTE on our wireless broadband network, alongside mobile WiMAX and we will incur significant costs to deploy such technology.  Additionally, LTE technology, or other alternative technologies that we may consider, may not perform as we expect on our network and deploying such technologies would result in additional risks to the company, including uncertainty regarding our ability to successfully add a new technology to our current network and to operate dual technology networks without disruptions to customer service, as well as our ability to generate new wholesale customers for the new network.
  • We currently depend on our commercial partners to develop and deliver the equipment for our legacy and mobile WiMAX networks, and will be dependent on commercial partners to deliver equipment and devices for our planned LTE network as well.
  • Many of our competitors for our retail business are better established and have significantly greater resources, and may subsidize their competitive offerings with other products and services.
  • Our substantial indebtedness and restrictive debt covenants could limit our financing options and liquidity position and may limit our ability to grow our business.
  • Sprint owns just less than a majority of our common shares, is our largest shareholder, and has the contractual ability to obtain enough shares to hold the majority voting interest in the company, and Sprint may have, or may develop in the future, interests that may diverge from other stockholders.
  • Future sales of large blocks of our common stock may adversely impact our stock price.

For a more detailed description of the factors that could cause such a difference, please refer to Clearwire's filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, including the information under the heading "Risk Factors" in our Annual Report on Form 10-K filed on February 16, 2012 and subsequent Form 10-Q filings. Clearwire assumes no obligation to update or supplement such forward-looking statements.
